Mom Turns to SafeKidZone to Protect Her Children

August 10, 2011

Another mom with a gripping story recently blogged about SafeKidZone and we thought we should share it with you.

Ten months ago this mom’s daughter was raped. Completely out of nowhere – she was an honour student and hung out with the “right” crowd.

This is not an exceptional story, according to RAINN, the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S. every 2 minutes.

This mom said her blog was usually her “Happy Place”, but when she discovered SafeKidZone she felt it was her responsibility to let people know.

“Prior to now, I have maintained this blog as my ‘happy place’, my escape, my happy place,” she said.

“However, as some degree of healing occurs, I am overwhelm with a need to protect more communities, more families, more women.”

Her story of what happened inspired other bloggers to comment about their own experiences and how they could see how SafeKidZone could help them and their children.

“Thanks for letting us know about this awesome App. I just might have to look into it. One of my nightmares is something happening to one of my children and me not being able to do a single thing about it,” one responder commented.

If you want to read more of this mom’s blog please visit her site.

With school starting soon, this mom blogger ended with this bit of advice.

“Its nearly back to school time. You’ve likely had all the important safety discussions with your children,” she said

“They’ve probably had special programs on safety at school. In all likelihood, you’ve carefully discussed events that you’ve learned of in the news, the tragedies of others motivating yet another conversation about staying safe.

You can NEVER do enough.”

For now, stay safe.

Mom blogging about SafeKidZone

August 9, 2011

With the recent expansion into different areas we have had some amazing responses from a wide variety of people.

A few weeks ago we posted some successes from students of a school who were trialling our product. this week we had some mom bloggers posting about SafeKidZone too.

One in particular stands out.  She  has a nine-year-old son who is starting school in a different part of town.

Concerned for his safety they bought him a cell phone but were still unsure about how safe he would be commuting from school to home.

However, she found SafeKidZone and immediately knew it was a “necessary addition to his new phone and [her] peace of mind”.

“The service made perfect sense. It would turn our son’s cell phone into his own personal help line,” she marvelled.

Having told her son about the service he was immediately exited as well.

“I won’t worry anymore, now that I know I can get help just by hitting this button,” he said.

To read the entire blog click on this link.

We have had a lot of interest lately in blogs so there will be more stories like this coming soon. You can also follow SafeKidZone via our Facebook page where you will find out about all the new releases and news as it happens.

But in the Meantime, Stay safe.

By following the link below you will be able to view it at the MobileTREC Youtube site.

Special needs child assisted by SafeKidZone

August 2, 2011

As we covered in our last blog post, SafeKidZone has been piloting a project at a local school.

Amongst one of the children chosen to be given a SafeKidZone phone was a 12-year-old special needs boy. His mother found there was a real change in him after he received it.

“My child is a special needs child and isn’t always confident or secure while with his friends, at school, or away from his home,” she said.

“Since he has received the SafeKidZone phone I have observed his attitude and self esteem climb tremendously. He seems to feel more confident because he knows that at any time regardless where he is I am just a button away.

The SafeKidZone phone allows him the independence that up to this point I had not been able to provide to him. Additionally, the SafeKidZone gives me the opportunity to let go of him slightly and gives me the support that I need to give him in order to further provide the safety-nets for him.”

Another bonus of the SafeKidZone system is that it is simple to use! By pressing the Panic Button it sets of a chain reaction of responses that are designed to keep you safe, as you can see in the image below.

According to the mother of the 12-year-old boy it is due to the ease of the technology that SafeKidZone is such an effective system for protecting your kids.

I am so appreciative of the SafeKidZone phone as this is the first time that I can let my child have some independence because the application is so easy, the set up is so user friendly and the process assures my child being safe or gives him the capability to recruit emergency assistance if he is presented with a dangerous situation, thank you for this SafeKidZone,” she said.

A SafeKidZone Community Project

July 28, 2011

As part of our commitment to the local community, we recently piloted SafeKidZone technology with a school near the MobileTREC headquarters.

The program was a raving success with both parents and children writing in to tell us of their experiences with the technology.

This week we would like to share with you how having the SafeKidZone phone added extra reassurance to the parent of a 14-year-old middle school girl.

“With SafeKidZone I am able to have some additional reassurance that my child has the ability to press the panic bottom when they are not being supervised by an adult, such as going to school or coming home from school,” she said.

“I am also able to give my child some independence because of the extra support that the SafeKidZone program provides to my child.”

“I am so appreciative of the opportunity to be part of the Gateway to Success, SafeKidZone project, it is an incredible opportunity. The safety of my child is the most important responsibility I have and the SafeKidZone phone provides that additional safety!”

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing more wins and successes from participants.

If you know of a group or charity that could benefit from the SafeKidZone technology, or would like to share a story of your own, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Stay safe,
The SafeKidZone Team.

Missing boys father calls for new technology

July 21, 2011

In a recent New York Times article, the father of Etan Patz, a boy who disappeared in 1979, called for every child to have an emergency cellphone on them at all times.

His comments came after the murder of 8-year-old boy, Leiby Kletzky, in Brooklyn last week.

Mr Patz said although the boy “had rehearsed the route [home] with his mother, he didn’t make the correct turn, then realized he was lost and had to ask for directions.”

He was never seen alive again.

With the aid of SafeKidZone this sort of tragedy could have been avoided.

A common misconception is the Panic Button is only useful in an emergency. However, it has many practical and preventative uses as well.

If for example your child get’s lost, he can hit the panic button on the phone which sends emails and text alerts to the emergency contacts along with a GPS location. It will also connect the child to a call center.

The call center can connect your child with you. Knowing exactly where he is you are able to either pick him up or direct him out of danger.

Texas Fire Chief, Randy Corbin, who recently trialled our product recognized many uses for it.

“I know from my personal experience that the most vulnerable populations are the very young and the very old. Many times these groups just need a little assistance, guidance, or reassurance, and don’t need to call 9-1-1,” he said.

“Parents and caretakers also need to know that everything is [okay] with those they are responsible for. Your system provides that.”

Kid Accidentally Calls 911 on Old Cell Phone

June 13, 2011

Toddler on Cell PhoneCute as cute can be. A precocious 2-year old kept 911 dispatchers tied up for over 10 minutes in Crawford County, AR on a cell phone that was completely shut off. One of the dispatchers was finally able to coax the little girl into handing the phone to her dad to see about putting strawberries on her ice cream. You can hear the dispatchers in action here.

The Crawford County dispatchers take almost 2,000 calls a month and getting over 20 accidental calls like this every day doesn’t make their job any easier. It seems that the only way for a parent to prevent their children from accidentally calling 911 on their old cell phones is to remove the battery. That’s right, even if the phone is turned off but still has a charged battery inside, it can still be used to call 911.

Older kids do need safety protection when you can’t be with them. SafeKidZone provides that protection anywhere, anytime without disrupting 911 emergency responders unnecessarily.

911 Services Lag Behind Cell Phone Technology

May 2, 2011

IT’S A MISTAKE TO ASSUME that because you call 911 from your cell phone, the dispatcher at the other end will know where you are – a dangerous mistake as one Army wife discovered.

“The phone rang at 4:43 am on March 27, 2007. Patty Michaels, a dispatcher at a 911 call center in Belleville, IL picked up. On the other end of the call, a woman screamed for help. She said her husband had attacked her. Michaels heard a baby crying in the background. The caller’s address appeared on Michaels’ screen: it was in O’Fallon, IL less than 10 miles away. Michaels asked the woman to confirm the location. “That’s when it got really tricky,” she says. The caller wasn’t in Illinois. She was in South Korea.

Two days earlier, the woman and her baby had left town to join her husband, an Army serviceman posted in Seoul, Korea. She was locked in her bedroom, afraid for her life. But because she had dialed 911 from a VOIP – voice over Internet protocol – service, Michaels had absolutely no way of finding her with the system. The 911 system doesn’t locate computers; it only shows the address that the phone service is registered to, and when Michaels’ caller left the country, she didn’t update her address.”

You can read the full story about the resourcefulness of this amazing dispatcher in the TIMES feature article at http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2062452,00.html

We have come to assume that because our GPS-enabled phones may know exactly where we are, and because we see it every night on our favorite cop shows, that 911 will know where to send help when we call from our cell phone – or even just have it turned on. Unfortunately, television is not reality. Traditional emergency services don’t take texts, photos, Skype calls or videos either.

You see, 911 was designed for landlines and was not a very sophisticated technology. Beginning in 1968, it took 20 years for 911 to reach 50% of the US population and dispatchers couldn’t even tell where the calls were coming from! By the time this got sorted out along came the cell phone with advancements in technology far outstripping 911 technology by light years!
