FAQ

General Questions

What is SafeKidZone?

SafeKidZone is a cell phone-based personal security network that enables parents to protect kids from harm, by giving them one-click emergency access to family, friends, and police.

At the press of a panic button it simultaneously alerts and mobilizes a select group of friends and family when a child is in trouble and, if needed, gets the child’s emergency directly to the nearest 911 emergency services dispatcher in seconds with complete information.

Downloading and installing the application on a mobile phone takes about two minutes. After downloading and registering, the "panic button" and other safety features are automatically enabled.

Will it work everywhere?

As long as you have a cell signal, our satellites can see the phone and the basic functions will be available.

For smart phones you must also have a data connection and then all functions will be operational.

Can I talk to a live person if I need technical support?

Yes, there are live technical support agents 24 hours 7 days per week.

What languages do you support?

Currently we provide our service in English and soon in Spanish.

What is the status of the service?

We are in the pre-launch stage right now.

Does everything work?

Yes, but we are anxious to receive feedback from users to improve the system.

What version of SafeKidZone software is now available?

We are currently in on Version 1.0

Is the service fully available to the public now?

Yes.

Do I need anything special to make your software work?

No.

More features of the service are available for smart phones which have a GPS chip and Internet data connection.

Our Android application was originally installed directly to phones. This would not allow for simple upgrades. The quick fix is to delete it from your phone and reinstall it using the Android Market. This will open the door to allowing easy upgrades of your application. To remove the old version follow the steps below:
  1. Go to the home screen of your phone. Make sure no apps are open on your screen.
  2. Press the dedicated off-screen [Menu] button. It is located near the [Home] button on your phone. Go to, Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
  3. Search for and click on the application you downloaded whether it was SafeTREC or SafeKidZone.
  4. Click on the grey Uninstall > OK > OK.
  5. Now open your Android Market. This is available in the folder listing all of your applications. Search for your appropriate application, SafeKidZone or SafeTREC. Choose to install it by selecting Free > OK. It will download and install.
  6. Find the app in your folder of applications and open it. You may be tasked to login. Do so and your app will be up and running. The Android Market will tell you if updates are available.
  7. Automatic Updating - Find your app in the Android Market. When you open it in the Android Market, there is a check box with the ability to "Allow Automatic Updating". Checking that will keep your SafeKidZone or SafeTREC app constantly updated with the latest safety protection features.

Pricing

How much is the SafeKidZone service?

We have four levels of service – Basic, Advanced, Premium and Corporate.

The Basic level is free, $9.95/month for an individual Advanced subscription and $12.95 for an individual Premium subscription.

Family plans are also available. See the pricing page for more information.

Are there any sorts of surprise costs in the fine print?

No, there are none.

In the future, new features may incur optional additional fees.

Are there any special charges if I am out of the country?

No charges. No hidden fees. You will need to call you mobile phone carrier to make certain that you have a connection at your destination.

With a smart phone you must also have the data connection activated on your phone for international use for the service to fully work. This is a service that most cell phone companies provide throughout the world.

What is the Panic button and how does it work?

We enable a Panic Button on your cell phone. This is done through a menu selection on the downloaded software application (for smart phones) or thru a speed dial and other methods (for non-smart phones).

When you press the button an alert is immediately sent to your Safety Network and our 24/7 Response Call Center. If they don't resolve your emergency rapidly, our Call Center will escalate your emergency to the nearest 911 emergency responder.

Why you need a Panic Button

  • You never know when danger can strike
  • The Panic Button is always with the phone
  • Immediately alerts friends, family, and neighbors
  • Notifies our 24/7 Response Call Center
  • Gives precise location by GPS technology
  • There's no extra device needed and set up is easy!
  • If calling is too dangerous, SafeKidZone sends a discrete text and email with your kid's location and personal information.
What is the Emergency Safety Profile?

You know what your child looks like. How tall? What color eyes? And what, if any, medical concerns he or she has. Where is he/she located?

The Emergency Safety Profile eliminates frantic descriptions and differing interpretations.

Vital statistics, GPS location and a current photo of your child are made available to the Safety Network and 911 responders instantly.

Minute-by-minute updates are done to keep the information current.

These vital statistics and a current photo of your child are made available to the Safety Network and 911 Emergency responders instantly.

What is a Safety Network?

A Safety Network is a network of the subscribers' chosen personal family members or friends who accept the connection to be alerted and come to the person’s aid should the subscriber press his panic button. When the panic button is pressed the members of one’s safety network are contacted within minutes by use of email, SMS (text messages) and with the use of an open conference call so that they can rapidly assist.

What is a Conference Bridge?

When the Panic Button is pressed a live conference call is opened up between the cell phones of the subscriber, the 24/7 Response Call Center and the members of the subscribers Safety Network. This enables all to speak together to find out what is happening and resolve the matter rapidly without trying to reach the subscriber and receiving a busy signal.

What is the Safe Neighbors Program?

There was a time when you could turn to your next-door-neighbor for help. That time is back. The Safe Neighbors Program allows any person signed-in the program to help any person in their proximity who presses the Panic Button. If your child needs help and a neighbor is close by, they will get the alert and be able to act faster if you are not with them.

That’s help for your child “where you need it - when you need it”.

Why the Safe Neighbors Program is important

  • Your child can get help from a neighbor if you are not with them
  • You can also help someone else when danger strikes them
  • Share your known danger area with neighbors
What is meant by Threat Levels?

As your child’s location changes so does the level of threats.

In the city, a few blocks can mean the difference between safe passage and real trouble.

The best way to avoid danger is to know where is occurs. Using our Danger Formula, we give your child a clear assessment of the danger in their current location so they can avoid it. The higher the level of threat the greater the danger.

Why Threat Levels are important

  • Knowing threats in your child’s location can help him/her avoid danger
  • They always know if they are close to Sex Offenders locations
  • Threat level is a real time measurement of danger
  • Crime statistics are automatically calculated into the threat level
  • Easily identify places your child should avoid
  • The child is automatically alerted if they are near a dangerous area
  • Understand why an area is dangerous
How is the sex offender feature useful?

Sex Offender and Crime proximity to a kid’s location are both good indications of an area’s Threat Level. Unlike a crime that happened yesterday, sex offenders are still there. That's why we incorporated sex offender information into the Threat Level calculation for any location. We also display sex offender data visually in an easy to understand map.

The sex offender feature also includes:

  • Automatic Calculation in your Threat Level
  • Real time Sex Offender Threat Analysis
  • Real time Sex Offender Threat Alerts
  • Visually located relative to your location
How is the crime-data feature useful?

A good indication of the Threat Level where you are located is the amount and type of crime in that area. That's why we incorporated local crime information into the Threat Level Formula for your location. We also display crime data visually in an easy to understand map.

Relevant Crime Data features also includes:

  • Automatic Calculation in your Threat Level
  • Real-time Crime Threat Analysis
  • Real-time Crime Threat Alerts
  • All types of crime
  • Visually understand crime in your location

GPS

What is GPS?

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space-based global navigation satellite system. It provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to worldwide users on a continuous basis in all weather, day and night, anywhere on or near the Earth which has an unobstructed view of four or more GPS satellites.

GPS has become a mainstay of transportation systems worldwide, providing navigation for aviation, ground, and maritime operations. Disaster relief and emergency services depend upon GPS for location and timing capabilities in their life-saving missions. The accurate timing that GPS provides facilitates everyday activities such as banking, mobile phone operations, the control of power grids, and, of course, geolocation.

How does SafeKidZone use GPS to keep my kids safe?

Due in part to regulations encouraging mobile phone tracking, including E911, the majority of GPS receivers are built into mobile telephones, with varying degrees of coverage and user accessibility. SafeKidZone uses GPS technology to determine the exact location of your child, and uses the mobile phone's data connection to download maps and calculate danger formulas and threat levels in the vicinity of your child.

What is the accuracy of GPS?

Provided you are using a smart phone such as a Blackberry, iPhone, or Android then the GPS location should be accurate to longitude and latitude provided the SafeKidZone application is running on the cell phone, the phone is on and has battery power.

For example many BlackBerrys are powered by the SiRFstarIII chip which should be distinguished from GPS chipsets made by other manufacturers (Garmin or Trimble Inc for example). It can acquire and maintain a signal lock in urban or densely covered forest environments. It is very quick time to first fix (TTFF), which is the time it takes for a GPS receiver to lock onto the satellite signals and determine the initial position.

The GPS location is not available to non smart phone users.

Doesn't using GPS on my phone use up a lot of data?

No. If you were to use SafeKidZone every day (which we hope you do) all day, you would only use 1 MB per day.

Does my phone have GPS capability?

If it is a smart phone such as iPhone, Blackberry or Android it does.

Check with your carrier if you are uncertain.

Can I locate more than one cell phone?

Yes. Our locating capability is unlimited, and there are no hidden fees or extra costs.

Can anyone locate my phone with your software installed?

No. When you register on our website you will identify who you allow to see your location. If you have not specifically allowed someone to see your location, then they will not.

Why does the Call Center not know my current location?

There are 3 simple reasons,

  1. Your GPS is off.
  2. Your application is off.
  3. You turned one of the functions listed above on but immediately pressed the Panic Button not giving the GPS time to synchronise with our servers. It takes 1-2 minutes to sync depending on your GPS reception.
Why is my location not up-to-date?
  1. Your GPS is off.
  2. Your application is off.
  3. When you turn either of those on it will take 1-2 minutes for our servers to sync depending on your GPS reception and cellular signal. Immediately pressing the Panic Button after turning your GPS or app on won't allow for your GPS to sync with our servers.
